Lanett City Schools shut down school server after perceived malware attack
LANETT — The Lanett City School System has shut down all computer servers throughout the district as a safety precaution after a perceived malware attack, according to Interim Superintendent Jennifer Boyd.
“On Wednesday, Sept. 18, Lanett City Schools experienced a malware attack,” Boyd said in an emailed statement to The Valley Times-News. “We are currently working with state and federal agencies and network engineers to determine the extent of this attack on our district.”
Boyd said the district isn’t sure if any records have been breached and a state engineer is currently working on the problem within the district.
She said during the early morning hours on Wednesday, one workstation in the district had a suspicious message. After seeing the message, Boyd said she ordered all servers to be disconnected until the district learns the extent of the malware.
“Everything is down throughout the district as a safety precaution,” she said.
She said the only communication from the district through email has been through her personal cell phone.
