Auburn fans out donate Alabama fans in food drive
VALLEY — Bradshaw-Chambers County Library kicked off this year’s Tackle Hunger Food Drive in September and collected a total of 1,299 noon-perishable food items to be donated to the Christian Service Center and the Interfaith Food Closet.
The food drive centered around the Iron Bowl rivalry between Auburn and Alabama. Patrons were asked to make donations based on their team allegiance through Monday, Nov. 25.
Alabama fans donated 553 items and Auburn fans 746.
For every five items donated, patrons were eligible for an Auburn or an Alabama tailgate giveaway that included a $25 Walmart gift card, an Igloo cooler, a birdhouse made by Charles Chapman, an oversized plush tiger or elephant and many other team-specific items. The Auburn winner, Mary Sue Newton of Valley, said she was thrilled to win for the orange and blue.
“I graduated from Auburn, my daughter did and I have a granddaughter in school there now,” she said. “I have Auburn in my heart and am very happy to win this.”
Dot Brumbeloe is the Alabama winner.
“I’ve been an Alabama fan since I married my husband Gerald more than 50 years ago,” she said. “Our two sons, Stan and Steven, are big Alabama fans.
